Zuckerberg ties the knot

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his status to "married" on Saturday.
Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, 27, tied the knot at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, Calif., home, capping a busy week for the couple, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple. The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity.
Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history Friday. And Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28, the person said.
The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years, the person said, adding Zuckerberg designed the ring featuring "a very simple ruby."

The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's back yard before fewer than 100 guests, including Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. The guests all thought they were coming to celebrate Chan's graduation but were told after they arrived that the event was a wedding.
"Everybody was shocked," the guest said.
Rather than his trademark hoodie, Zuckerberg wore a suit for the ceremony, while his bride wore a traditional wedding dress.
Food was served family-style and included dishes from the couple's favourite Palo Alto sushi restaurant.
The two had been planning the marriage for months but were waiting until Chan had graduated to hold the wedding, the guest said. The timing wasn't tied to the IPO, since the date the company planned to go public was a "moving target," the guest said.
Even after the IPO, Zuckerberg remains Facebook's single largest shareholder, with 503.6 million shares. He also controls the company with 56 per cent of its voting stock.
The site, which was born in a Harvard dorm room in 2004, has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people. Zuckerberg, who grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., was selected as Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2010, at age 26.

Google gets China OK for Motorola deal

Authorities in China have approved Google Inc.'s bid to buy phone maker Motorola Mobility, clearing the way for the $12.5 billion deal to close early next week.
But Chinese regulators attached a big condition: That Google's Android operating system for mobile devices remain available to all at no cost for the next five years.
The approval brings the Internet search giant closer to sealing its biggest acquisition ever. Buying Motorola allows Google to expand into manufacturing phones, tablet computers and other consumer devices for the first time. The deal also gives Google access to more than 17,000 Motorola patents.
The Chinese government approved the deal on Saturday, Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said. "We look forward to closing the deal," she said.
The deal was announced last August and had received all necessary regulatory approvals except in China, where Google's government relations have been strained since it moved its search engine out of the country two years ago in a dispute over censorship and computer security.
Google prizes Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.'s patents as a crucial weapon in the intellectual arms race with Apple, Microsoft and other rivals maneuvering to gain more control over smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.
Google's Android software powers more than 250 million mobile devices made by a variety of manufacturers, including Motorola Mobility. The latest versions must be made available free of charge for the next five years, apparently in response to concerns that competition could be hurt if Google gives updated versions to Motorola Mobility and withholds them from others. Google doesn't currently charge for Android.
Google earlier had pledged to make Android available to all its mobile partners. Even if Google were to discriminate, cellphone makers still could rely on mobile software from Microsoft Corp., Research in Motion and Hewlett-Packard Co., among others.
Earlier, the U.S. Justice Department found no evidence that Google's ownership of Motorola Mobility would lessen competition in a mobile device market that is becoming increasingly important as more people connect to the Internet on smartphones and tablet computers instead of desktop and laptop computers.
The union with Motorola Mobility will open new opportunities and pose potentially troublesome challenges for a management team that so far has concentrated on Internet search, ad sales and other software-driven online services.
Motorola Mobility's expertise in mobile devices and set-top boxes for cable TV will allow Google to play an even more influential role in shaping the future of hand-held computing and home entertainment.
The $12.5 billion price paid by Google is more than the combined amount that Google has paid for the 185 other acquisitions that it has completed since going public in 2004.
Google is based in Mountain View, California, while Motorola Mobility has its headquarters in Libertyville, Illinois.

How to get arrested in Dubai

The Sun has reported that a British woman is facing the possibility of three years in prison in Dubai, after a taxi driver accused her of having sex with a fellow passenger in the back of his cab.
The woman, 27-year old recruitment consultant Rebecca Black, told The Sun she had spent five days behind bars before being released on bail. She denied the allegation, saying she was alone in the cab and instead arrested for drinking a bottle of beer, which is also illegal in the UAE.
Of course she's not the first Brit to wind up behind bars or deported because they're not clued up about United Arab Emirates laws.
According to the Foreign Office, 1.1 million Britons visited the UAE last year and 294 of them were arrested or detained by police - making it more likely to happen there than in any other country in the world.
So if getting banged up abroad is on your 'to do' list of life experiences, here are some easy ways to break the law in Dubai...
Do some dirty dancing
Ever thought your dance moves ought to be illegal? Then head to Dubai, where they just very well might be. Unless you're at a licensed club or in the privacy of your hotel room then dancing is considered indecent and provocative and could get you arrested. During Ramadan you won't even find a dancefloor to throw some shapes on risk-free - dancing, loud music and live music are forbidden during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, so nightclubs usually close and all the bands go on holiday.
Give someone the finger
Back home it's just a bit rude but making insulting gestures in Dubai is regarded as obscene and totally unacceptable – as 56-year-old Brit Simon Andrew discovered in 2010 when he was accused of showing an aviation student his middle finger during a row and was arrested. He denied flipping the bird but had his passport confiscated for eight months as bail surety. It has been known for offenders to get a six-month sentence for such an act and some have been deported.
Have sex on the beach
For a surefire way to wind up behind bars, break a couple of laws at once. Because of their strict laws about indecency, public sex is beyond unacceptable. Do it with someone you're not married to – a crime that entails prosecution, imprisonment and/or a fine and deportation – and you're firing on all cylinders. Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, and Vince Acors, 34, of Bromley, London, did just that in 2009 and were banged up for three months before being deported, as well as fined 1,000 dirhams (about £180).
Snog in a restaurant
Don't assume you have to go all the way to infringe on their decency regulations – the law extends to kissing and even holding hands, unless you're married. British marketing executive Ayman Najafi and Charlotte Adams – both in their 20s - were arrested and accused of public indecency after an Emirati woman claimed they exchanged a passionate kiss in a restaurant. They were given a one-month jail sentence for public indecency and illegal drinking, fined 1,000 dirhams, then deported. The pair maintain it was merely a peck on the cheek.
Drink Sex on the Beach
Buying drinks in licensed hotels or bars is allowed but drinking – or being drunk – is illegal in public. You'll stand out particularly well in the resort of Sharjah where booze is banned full stop, apart from for residents with a licence to drink at home. It is also an offence in the UAE to drink and drive, no matter how tiny the amount. If you're arrested on alcohol-related offences you'll likely be jailed while you await trial and penalties entail hefty jail sentences and large fines.
Smoke some wacky baccy
Drugs are almost always a law breaker, but Dubai is about as far from Amsterdam as you can get. Possession and consumption is treated very seriously in the UAE and possession includes anything in your system, so even if you have a cheeky joint before you get on the Dubai-bound plane you could end up falling foul of their regulations, and wind up with their mandatory minimum of four years in jail.
Other laws you should know about
Shopping in shorts could attract attention from the authorities. Unless you're on the beach or by the pool, then anything tight, transparent, short or displaying your stomach, shoulders or back if you're a woman, is considered indecent. Same if you're a man in shorts or displaying a bare chest. Photography of certain government buildings is also illegal, as is perusing any form of pornographic material. If all else fails, smuggle in a bacon sandwich – pork is banned – and a poppy seed roll will add to the criminality of the action, as poppy seeds are also on the UAE's forbidden list.

Kanye West Joins The Kardashian Kast

Looks like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" will have a new cast member: Kanye West. But don't expect Khloé and Lamar-style action.
Kim K. confirmed to E! Online that her new beau, rapper Kanye West, will appear on several episodes of the reality series, saying: "I want to show my life,” adding, "If we are having dinner and he does show up, I'm sure we're not going to go, 'Stop the cameras!'"
But she added, "I'm not going to be taking a bubble bath and drinking champagne or on a sex swing [on camera] like Khloé and Lamar do," Kardashian told E! News, adding, "It's not going to be like that."
The lovebirds haven’t exactly been hiding their relationship: The two were recently spotted courtside at a Los Angeles Lakers game, but seemed to have eyes only for each other.

Jenna Talackova: 'I'm in it to win it'

Transgendered Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna Talackova plans on making serious run at top prize

TORONTO — Vancouver’s transgendered Miss Universe Canada contestant feels like she’s already triumphed by earning the chance to compete at this weekend’s pageant. But make no mistake: she also plans on making a serious run for the ultimate prize.
Jenna Talackova said this morning that the beauty competition will be “a great battle” and that she’s “in it to win it.”

Talackova and her 61 fellow contestants appeared at a Toronto school this morning to encourage kids to work hard and follow their dreams.
Talackova says she’s proud to be opening the door for other transgender pageant hopefuls who may want to follow in her footsteps.
The blond beauty ignited a media firestorm after she was initially disqualified from the pageant because she isn’t a naturally born female.
But pageant owner Donald Trump overruled the decision and said Talackova could take part.
Today’s event was part of several public appearances scheduled in advance of the Miss Universe Canada pageant in Toronto, which will crown a winner Saturday night.

“If it works out, then great. If not, I’m so proud of myself,” Talackova said after greeting hundreds of students.
“I’ve won in so many other ways that I feel good about.”
Talackova underwent sex-change surgery at age 19 and has said she knew from an early age that she was born the wrong gender.

She says she has a boyfriend and hopes to have two kids some day, but she didn’t initially tell him she was born male.
“I’ve set a precedent for a lot of women in my situation so once I step on that stage every woman in every other country that doesn’t have the option I have now can fight for it. I feel so blessed with this opportunity,” Talackova said.

Beauty pageant winner caught in ugly controversy

Torika Watters says she told pagaent organizers her age, and was told it didn’t matter.
A newly crowned beauty queen in Fiji, who sparked an outcry because of her mixed heritage, was asked to give up her title because of her age, not her race, according to pageant officials.

Torika Watters, 16, was chosen last month to represent Fiji in the Miss World contest. The pageant drew the likes of supermodel Rachel Hunter, who was a judge.
But after Watters won the title, she faced heavy backlash because of her mixed European/Fijian descent, and some said she did not look Fijian enough.

Torika Watters: ‘I had no intentions of doing anything sneaky or wrong'
Hundreds of derogatory comments had to be deleted from the Miss World Fiji Facebook page, according to reports.
Watters had to step down because she did not meet the minimum age requirement of 17, Miss World Fiji pageant director Andhy Blake told the Fiji Times. Koini Vakaloloma, 24, the first runner-up, will take her place at the Miss World competition in Inner Mongolia in August.
Watters issued a statement saying that she had been approached by Blake to be in the contest and at the time expressed concerns about the age requirement. Blake told her she was still eligible. "I had no intentions of doing anything sneaky or wrong and like the other contestants entered the competition for what I believed to be the right reasons—to be an Ambassador for Fiji and raise money for charitable causes," she wrote.
She went on to say: "I am proud of my identity as a Fijian and have never considered my people as racists." She is not challenging the decision and has chosen to walk away.
Blake confirmed that he was under the impression Watters could compete, but was told later by organizers that contestants had to be at least one month away from turning 17 by the start of the pageant.
A posting on the Miss World Fiji 2012 Facebook site says, "Please be informed despite media reports—Miss Torika Watters was never stripped of her title. We wish her well in her future endeavors and offer an apology to her, her beautiful family and friends for any distress this competition would have brought upon her! She will always be the very 1st Miss World Fiji!!"
Watters is eligible next year for the pageant, according to Blake, if she chooses to compete again.

How Britain was caught in a Twitter frenzy

Twitter now has more than 10million users in the UK, the social networking site has revealed.

Of the site’s 140million users, 10million are from the UK, which is thought to be the fourth-largest country for users in the world, behind the US, Brazil and Japan.

Top tweeter Stephen Fry has more than 4.2 million followers on the social networking site.

The company also revealed that 80% of UK users access the site through their mobile phone – a rate that is 45% higher than the world average – showing the popularity of the site to Britons on the go.

“Growth recently has been very sharp and the biggest Twitter spike we have seen was after the riots last year,” Kate Bussmann, social media consultant and author of ‘A Twitter Year: 365 Days in 140 Characters’, told Yahoo! News.

“People are increasingly turning to Twitter first to get their news and this was clearly seen in the riots. It was citizen reporting that let people know what was going on outside their front doors and that drove a lot of people to sign up to the site.

“In the UK we spend a lot of time indoors watching TV or in pubs watching football and both are massive drivers of Twitter use here,” she added. “We love to tweet while watching TV, watching X-Factor while Twitter is on so we can see what people are saying.”

ITV 2 programme 'The Only Way is Essex' uses hashtags to drive Twitter traffic.

One of the key attributes of the social network allows you to group comments about certain topics together, by adding the # symbol to a keyword. This process, known as “hashtagging”, allows users to see what everyone else is writing about certain topics and join the conversation themselves.

Broadcasters have taken advantage of the popularity of the social network, adding hashtags to TV show credits. ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, ‘Have I got News For You’, ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ and ‘The Only Way is Essex’ are just a sample of this, with all three forming common Twitter trending topics during their prime-time slots.

“What you don’t get on Facebook is this ongoing dialogue between lots and lots of people and TV companies are clued into this now,” Ms Bussmann said. “One thing ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is doing is putting hashtags up as people are still performing, promoting within their own show hashtag. By doing this they are creating mini conversations, then tracking it all to see how they are doing.”

Manchester City fans joined in on the hashtag, '#together', seen here on the side of the team bus.

The technique for driving Twitter conversation has also been adopted by political campaigns, music festivals and sporting events, with the Manchester City FC bus showing the hashtag “#together” during the team’s Premiership celebrations on Monday.

“A lot of people sign up and don’t really get it, there is a tipping point of following around 25 people when it becomes interesting,” Ms Bussmann added. “In the future Twitter is looking to break down this barrier as it is problem.”
